In Haiti, pregnancy and childbirth are often fatal; Haiti has the highest maternal, under-5 and infant mortality rate in the Western Hemisphere. Many local civil society organizations have joined the efforts of international and government agencies to gradually improve health conditions, one healthy delivery at a time. One such organization is Haiti Village Health (HVH). In the past year, this organization has launched a pre- and postnatal program which has provided healthcare to over 100 women.

Charitable organisations in Haiti with Bermuda connections escaped major damage as Tropical Storm Isaac blasted the Caribbean nation this weekend. Philip Rego, who operates the Feed My Lambs Ministry in Montrouis, reported that a tree fell on their newly-constructed school building, breaking down one of the walls.

The high winds also bent the building’s large metal doors, and the electricity and phone lines went down. Mr Rego said he is glad that those minor problems are all they will have to cope with in the aftermath.

A sweet 16 usually means a party and presents, but not for a Cambridge girl who recently got back from a trip to Haiti. Over March break, Kendra Lee travelled to the afflicted nation with her mom Daniela and volunteered with Haiti Village Health.

Led by Canadian Dr. Tiffany Keenan, the organization aims to provide sustainable health care for the Bas-Limbé region of Haiti by employing local medical and support staff and providing them with the training, tools and support to make them self-sufficient.

Its main mission is to improve maternal child health and reduce maternal, neonatal and child deaths, in addition to developing medical services, improved sanitation and access to clean drinking water, education and nutrition, immunization protection for all children, and strategies to reduce the incidence of malaria.

Haiti Village Health is featured on CBC's The National after the massive cholera outbreak in 2010.

Bermuda-based Emergency Room Doctor Tiffany Keenan got a touch of glamour while treating earthquake victims in Haiti when movie star Angelina Jolie showed up.

Ms Jolie visited Jacmel — a village in Haiti— on Wednesday and was met by members of the Canadian Force and Dr. Keenan.

Founder, Dr. Tiffany Keenan: “One day I said ‘look at the children playing’ and look at the village. They are healthier than when I came here six years ago." Tiffany Keenan hadn’t even reached her teen years when her piano teacher Margery MacRae saw in her the making of a humanitarian.

“She always said ‘Tiffany, I think you are going to be a missionary some day’ because I always liked [to dream of] travelling and it’s funny because I had never travelled as a kid.

“I am from a very, very small village in Canada, but I don’t know I guess she just saw that in me. She definitely gave me some drive to go forward.”

Dr Keenan, an Emergency Room physician at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, has taken part in volunteer medical missions in the Congo and Haiti.

Positive Legacy is providing the funding to improve sanitary conditions at the Haiti Village Health Clinic near Cap Haitien. This clinic provides a full-range of primary care services to more than 25,000 people in five neighboring villages. Believe it or not, they treated 3,500 patients during the cholera epidemic without any running water!
